It’s not just about getting a great deal on a car, sales at the department stores, a new mattress. Veterans Day is the day we all come together to pay tribute to those who have served our nation. In 1938, Armistice Day was declared a legal holiday, to be observed on November 11th. In 1954, the act was amended, replacing the word "Armistice" with the word "Veterans", and November 11th became the day we honor all American Veterans.

November is also Military Family Awareness Month, when we recognize the many sacrifices by family members and friends who support our military. We need to make an effort to remember our Veterans and active military, not only on specified holidays, but all year round. You can seek out organizations that need your help as a volunteer.

Last, but not least, we have some very exciting news. At MilitaryConnection.com, we have been working on a redesign of our website, one that contains the resources and information you have come to expect from us, in a user-friendly layout that is also responsive for tablet and cell phone use. We expect to launch the new site very soon, and hope you like it as much as we do.

Innovative New Way To Fund Your Business

New VAMBOA Partner, StreetShares, Announces a Special Veterans Day Offer For Veteran-owned Businesses

New VAMBOA Partner, StreetShares, Announces a Special Veterans Day Offer For Veteran-owned Businesses

StreetShares will make the first loan payment, up to $600, for Veteran borrowers funded on the StreetShares marketplace. To be eligible for the offer, which runs through the end of November, go to StreetShares.com/Veterans and apply for a business loan. You can apply in 10 minutes.
CEO Mark L. Rockefeller, a Veteran himself, designed a better way for Veterans to gain access to capital: On StreetShares, businesses create a simple 'pitch' about their business and why they need a loan. The pitch is posted to the StreetShares online marketplace, where hundreds of investors bid to fund a portion of the loan. The more bids, the lower the borrower's rate. It's like Shark Tank meets eBay for Veteran-owned businesses. StreetShares offers one year and three year business loans of $5,000 to $50,000. To qualify, businesses should be at least one year old and earning revenue. Learn more at StreetShares.com/Veterans.

CalVet Invites The Public To View The Wall, November 7-11

The Global War on Terror Wall of Remembrance honors our fallen service members, from the U.S. Embassy bombing in Beirut, Lebanon in 1983, to current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Wall also honors civilians and first responders who died during the terror attacks of 9/11. Inscribed with 11,000 names, the Wall was designed and built by Vision2Victory, a non-profit organization granting wishes to combat-injured Veterans. The Wall was originally intended to be displayed once, in honor of the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. It became popular, and began touring the country three years ago. Through the kind assistance of CalVet, the Wall is coming to Sacramento, CA. Volunteers are needed to set up and tear down the exhibit, stand guard at the exhibit, and staff Veteran service organization (VSO) information tables. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Phil Rios.

CNN Heroes

They’re Our Heroes, Too

They’re Our Heroes, Too

What do Kid Rock, Gary Sinise and Kathy Griffin have in common? Beyond their undeniable talent, it’s their unyielding support for our Veterans. In the half-hour Stars and Stripes Unite: A CNN Heroes Special, Anderson Cooper took viewers inside the personal and profoundly moving journeys with the troops. From a stop in Kid Rock’s Michigan, to a revealing sit-down with Griffin, to a lively performance by Sinise’s Lt. Dan Band at a Marine base, these three celebrities shared how and why they are dedicated to helping our servicemen and women. You can help choose the CNN Hero of the Year from the ten nominees. You may vote once a day, every day with your e-mail address -- and also through Facebook. Voting continues through Sunday, November 16, 2014.

"For Love of Country: What our Veterans Can Teach Us About Citizenship, Heroism, and Sacrifice" is a collaborative between long-time Veteran advocate and Starbucks chairman/CEO Howard Schultz, and 2006 National Book Award finalist and Washington Post editor Rajiv Chandrasekaran. The book will take readers through the struggles that Veterans face, both in combat and back home. The book highlights the deeds and sacrifices made by Post-9/11 Veterans and their families, from acts of valor during the thick of the fight, to community leadership as civilian teachers, doctors, law enforcement and other occupations.

Unfortunate News

If It Seems Too Good To Be True…

Yet Another Scam Targeting Veterans

Attention Veterans: There is another unfortunate scam targeting Veterans and their families. Dishonest advisers are claiming to offer free help with paperwork for pension claims. The scheme involves attorneys, financial planners, and insurance agents trying to persuade Veterans over 65 to make decisions about their pensions without giving them the whole truth about the long-term consequences. Specifically, these unscrupulous brokers try to convince Veterans to transfer their assets to a trust -or to invest in insurance products- so they can qualify for Aid and Attendance benefits. What they don't reveal is that these transactions could mean that the Veteran loses eligibility for Medicaid services, or loses the use of their money for a long time. Adding insult to injury, the advisers are charging fees that range from hundreds to thousands of dollars for their services. Knowledge is power. Stay informed and beware.
