Newsletter - November 2014 #2

Unsubscribe | Tell a Friend

As we prepare for our Thanksgiving celebrations, many of us have begun to think about the things we are most thankful for. Personally, I have found that the best way to appreciate my blessings is to say “I have” instead of “I want.” While we gear up for the year-end holidays, we need to remember that not every family has the opportunity to be together. Military families make these sacrifices daily. Their spouses are keeping home and family together by themselves, and military children are missing one or both of their parents. So during this season of giving, please remember the families of our heroes in uniform. Seek out organizations that could use your help as a volunteer, or your donation to help a military or Veteran family. Contact us if you need a recommendation for a great non-profit organization.

Warm regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Partnering with other non-profits, local businesses and community organizations, services include veteran-specific counseling, financial training, health and dental screenings, homework help for the children and much more. Helping Veterans

Los Angeles Stand Down

Los Angeles Stand Down

Although the numbers have decreased, Los Angeles still has the largest population of homeless military Veterans in the nation. The latest homeless count estimates more than 6,300 Veterans are living on L.A. streets. Homeless Vets account for nearly 20% of the people living on the streets and in shelters in Los Angeles. To that end, the first annual Los Angeles Veteran & Families Stand Down will take place December 20-22, 2014. This three-day event will be held inside the Los Angeles Convention Center. The location, size and scope of the event will serve both male and female Veterans, as well as their families. For information regarding the event, click here. For more information on becoming a Stand Down sponsor or volunteer, contact Nancy Wolf at 310.744.6501 or email LAStandDown@gmail.com.

Research Study for Families

Research Study for Families

FOCUS (Families OverComing Under Stress) has a research opportunity available to families with preschool-age children. FOCUS-Early Childhood is designed to increase family resilience in Military, Veteran, Reserve, and National Guard families with children ages 3-6. They are testing the effectiveness of a resiliency training program (FOCUS – Early Childhood), which is designed to help families navigate the challenges that service brings to parents. The program is solutions-oriented, working to capitalize on families’ existing strengths and to teach new parenting skills. For example, they help children and parents with emotion regulation skills. They also help parents learn new parenting strategies and problem solving skills. Although services are provided online so that families do not need to travel for assessments or sessions, they must reside in the Los Angeles area. Qualifying families will be compensated for their time and provided with all study materials free of charge. For eligibility requirements, call 310 903-2308.

Express Your Gratitude

Help However You Can

Help However You Can

Why should you support Operation Gratitude? Because there are more than 150,000 American service members deployed far from home and loved ones, most in harm’s way. Because they are still sending packages to Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as to Liberia, Korea and to ships in international waters. Operation Gratitude also sends packages to tens of thousands of Veterans and new recruits here at home. All of our heroes need a reminder that the American people are thinking of them and appreciate their service. Whether you knit a warm scarf, write a letter, donate care package items, give $15 to send one package, $45 to send three packages, or send a package every month of the year for $180, your support of our brave men and women in uniform is always welcome.

Got The Chops?

Audition Online

Audition Online

Since 2010, 4TROOPS has been performing a variety of songs, specializing in patriotic themed songs and military audiences. In their debut year, 4TROOPS performed a concert on the retired aircraft carrier U.S.S. Intrepid (CV-11) and even sang the National Anthem at the 2010 World Series. Now Sony Music is looking to form a new group of singing Veterans to record music and tour the world as professional vocal performers. Sony is partnering with the Center for American Military Music Opportunities (CAMMO) to hold open auditions online. All U.S. military Veterans with an honorable discharge are eligible to try out. Active duty personnel separating from service or starting terminal leave by March 1, 2015, are also eligible. National Guard and Reserve component service-members who are able to obtain permission for time off to fulfill recording, promotional and performance obligations for the group are also invited to audition.

Homefront America

Stock the Shelves for the Holidays

Stock the Shelves for the Holidays

The Homefront America Christmas Toy Store provides military parents the opportunity to "shop" for toys for their children at no cost. While the parents are busy shopping, the children will enjoy lunch, crafts & activities, face painting, bounce house, caroling, and a visit from Santa and his Elves. The program serves active duty military children from Camp Pendleton and surrounding military communities. You can help by making a monetary gift donation to assist in the purchasing of toys for the Toy Store. For the past several years, volunteers have worked hard to build a network of partners, including Mattel Toy Company, to purchase items for their programs at substantially reduced costs. This collaborative partnership makes it possible for Homefront America to broaden their outreach efforts and serve more families. You can make a toy donation or monetary donation. For more information, email info@homefrontamerica.org or call (949) 248-9468

Giving Help. Giving Hope

Complimentary Mental Health Services

Complimentary Mental Health Services

Give an Hour provides free mental health services to military personnel and their families. If you or someone you love is struggling this holiday season, Give an Hour can help. To minimize stress, Give an Hour suggests the following:

  • Ask for help from family and friends (e.g., Can you watch the baby while I do some holiday shopping? I’ve got so much on my plate, can you help me wrap presents?)
  • Be firm with your limits. If you can’t muster the time, energy, or money to travel to visit relatives, say so; if you can’t organize this year’s bake sale at the school, say so.
  • Look for opportunities to help others in need. The act of giving improves our mood and can lift our spirits.
  • Avoid financial stress by avoiding the temptation to spend beyond your means, and instead focus on "gifts from the heart" (photo albums, written messages, and homemade items).
