If you are a Veteran business owner, I hope you will join VAMBOA, the Veteran and Military Business Owners Association. This non-profit Veteran business trade association promotes and assists Veteran Business Owners, Service Disabled Veteran Owned Businesses (SDVOB) and Military Business Owners. Join today for networking, collaboration, mentoring, education, certification and advocacy. Membership is complimentary, and VAMBOA is gearing up to have a busy and eventful 2015. Along those lines, November 3 - November 7, 2014 is Veteran Small Business Week, a Small Business Administration (SBA) initiative to reach out to Veteran entrepreneurs to ensure they have the tools and capital they need to start or grow a business. Veterans are highly-skilled and highly-trained leaders in their communities; it makes sense that after serving their country, they would want to bring these skills back home and start businesses. During Veterans Small Business Week, SBA staff all across the country will be working with partner organizations on educational efforts, mentoring, and training for Veterans. The SBA provides Veterans access to business counseling and training, capital and business development opportunities through government contracts.

Veteran Friendly, Both As An Employer And An Educator

Veterans themselves, Gene and Bill England wanted to do their part to help soldiers get jobs upon leaving the U.S. military. So the owners of refrigerated trucking company C.R. England decided to make it their goal to hire 350 Veterans by year's end to drive their fleet of semi-tractor trailers. The company underlined that commitment by showing off five trucks and trailers that were newly redecorated with a military theme. Those rigs will only be driven by Veterans. C.R. England's initiative also provides tuition incentives for Veterans to pursue more education, along with access to career counselors to find the right kind of driving job within the company. Veterans also get hats and vehicle decals that recognize them as an "Honored Veteran" and the opportunity annually to drive the military-branded trucks. Candidates must be Veterans with a clean safety record.

Unfortunate News

If It Seems Too Good To Be True…

Yet Another Scam Targeting Veterans

Attention Veterans: There is another unfortunate scam targeting Veterans and their families. Dishonest advisers are claiming to offer free help with paperwork for pension claims. The scheme involves attorneys, financial planners, and insurance agents trying to persuade Veterans over 65 to make decisions about their pensions without giving them the whole truth about the long-term consequences. Specifically, these unscrupulous brokers try to convince Veterans to transfer their assets to a trust -or to invest in insurance products- so they can qualify for Aid and Attendance benefits. What they don't reveal is that these transactions could mean that the Veteran loses eligibility for Medicaid services, or loses the use of their money for a long time. Adding insult to injury, the advisers are charging fees that range from hundreds to thousands of dollars for their services. Knowledge is power. Stay informed and beware.

CalVet Invites The Public To View The Wall, November 7-11

The Global War on Terror Wall of Remembrance honors our fallen service members, from the U.S. Embassy bombing in Beirut, Lebanon in 1983, to current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Wall also honors civilians and first responders who died during the terror attacks of 9/11. Inscribed with 11,000 names, the Wall was designed and built by Vision2Victory, a non-profit organization granting wishes to combat-injured Veterans. The Wall was originally intended to be displayed once, in honor of the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. It became popular, and began touring the country three years ago. Through the kind assistance of CalVet, the Wall is coming to Sacramento, CA. Volunteers are needed to set up and tear down the exhibit, stand guard at the exhibit, and staff Veteran service organization (VSO) information tables. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Phil Rios.

The Soldiers Project

Thank You Judith

After 10 years as The Soldiers Project's Executive Director and Chairman of the Board, Dr. Judith Broder announced her retirement. Dr. Broder's vision and tireless dedication has helped thousands of Veterans and their loved ones receive critical mental health services. With nothing more than a dream, a phone line and a website, Dr. Broder created an organization that now provides nearly $1 million in pro bono therapy annually. In 2014 alone, over 350 Veterans received free therapy from The Soldiers Project's volunteers. They also provide treatment to family members and loved ones. Treatment is conducted in private offices by volunteer therapists, and is entirely confidential and not reported to any governmental agency.
