Newsletter - September 2014 #1

Unsubscribe | Tell a Friend

September is National Suicide Awareness Month. By bringing the issue of suicide to the nation's attention, hopefully we can de-stigmatize PTSD, depression, and the other mental health issues that are associated with suicide. Warning signs include depression, hopelessness, anxiety and agitation, and irritability. Suicidal behaviors include withdrawal from others, giving away treasured belongings, loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyed, extreme risk-taking and substance abuse.
If you have thoughts of suicide or are depressed, please be courageous and ask for help. If you suspect your buddy or a loved one needs help, this is the time to intervene; you could be saving a life. The Veterans & Suicide Help Line can be reached at 800-273-8255. The Vet2Vet Crisis Line can be reached at 877-838-2838. Additionally, both Give An Hour and The Soldiers Project provide free and confidential mental health counseling. Ask. Care. Take Action. Don't be afraid to ask, "Are you thinking of killing yourself?" Offer care and compassion. Take action to secure the professional help that could potentially save a life.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Change the Story

Tell your story. Listen to a story. Be a life changer. You can reach out to a friend in need. Our friends at Give an Hour would like to invite you to join their engagement campaign and change the story about mental health issues. As founder Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen says, "The stigma associated with mental illness is a huge problem within our society- a problem we must address if we hope to reduce the number of service members and Veterans who choose suicide every day." Please show your support and "like" them on Facebook and visit them on the web.

Get a "Benefits" Check-up

Regardless of your age, branch of service, assignment or post, if you were discharged honorably, you may be entitled to an impressive array of state and federal benefits. Other benefit you may qualify for include free or reduced-fee licenses, state parks passes, property tax exemptions and specialty license plates. What's more, if you are a service-connected disabled Veteran, your dependents may qualify to attend a state college or university tuition-free. Sullivan University

Veteran School Salute Recipient

Veteran School Salute Recipient

Sullivan University faculty, staff and administration believe qualified individuals should have the opportunity to pursue formal academic training at the institution of their choice. Sullivan University System has maintained an academic partnership with the military since 1982, when the leadership at nearby Ft. Knox approached the faculty at Sullivan, asking them to train Army cooks in the culinary arts. Today, that academic partnership extends beyond the realm of active duty service members. Approximately 800 of Sullivan's 7,000 students are either active duty military, Reservists, Veterans, or military dependents. These are just a few of the reasons why Sullivan University was awarded the Veteran School Salute. For more information, click here.

Gift Card Drive

Helping Veterans

Helping Veterans

Our friends at Three Hots & A Cot are always in need of food, clothes, cleaning supplie - all the regular stuff. They have come up with an easy way to help - gift cards for discount stores or grocery stores. Cards for Wal-Mart, SAMS, Publix, etc. will help fill the need for perishable foods - produce, dairy, meats and eggs. They also have many Veterans that come to them with only the clothing on their backs. While they can help with pants, shirts, jackets and such from the clothes closet, they do need under clothes that need to be new. If you or your organization need a "Drive Idea", there you go!. Spread the word...the more people who know, the more people that can help.

Calling All Animal Lovers

Calling All Animal Lovers

People who donate to charity tend to have their "pet" projects, the ones they most like to support. Well, the pun was intended, and we're calling on all animal lovers to help Guardian Angels for Soldier's Pets program, Warrior's Angels, build a training facility to benefits service members and Veterans with PTSD. The facility will train specific teams of service member or Veteran (Handler) with their assigned Assistance Service Canine (ASC) candidate. For more information, visit them on the web.

Have You Received Yours?

The New Veteran Health Identification Card

The New Veteran Health Identification Card

If you are a Veteran enrolled in the VA health care system, be on the lookout for your new ID card, which began mailing in May, and should finish up by November. In addition to increased security for your personal information, the new card contains a salute to your military service - the emblem of your branch of service. Several special awards will also be listed. Veterans who have the old Veteran Identification Card (VIC) will automatically have the VHIC mailed to them. Enrolled Veterans who do not have the VIC (the old identification card), may contact their local VA medical center Enrollment Coordinator to arrange to have their picture taken for the new VHIC, or they may request a new VHIC at their next VA health care appointment. If you are not currently enrolled with the VA for your health care, apply online or call 1-877-222-VETS (8387). You may also apply for enrollment in person at your local VA medical facility.
