October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, reminding us that the more our lives move online, the more vigilant we need to be to protect our information and our identities. Scam artists who prey on members of the military, Veterans, and their loved ones have no shame. But there are ways to avoid getting ripped off by these heartless crooks.

Here are some tips to keep in mind to avoid becoming a statistic: • Be wary of internet dating scams. • Never pay up-front to get a loan or a credit card, unless it’s a pre-paid card. If they promise same day cash and no credit check, there will usually be outrageous interest rates. • If you’re car shopping, don’t be in a rush. Scammers are taking to Craigslist, offering too-good-to-be-true discounts on cars for military personnel. In some cases, the scammers claim they are military members about to be deployed and need to sell a vehicle fast. The same holds true for housing scams. • If you’re putting your finances in order, make sure the person you are dealing with is a reputable financial planner. • If you’re buying insurance, get what you need, NOT what the salesperson wants to sell you. • Make sure your passwords are complex, changed often, and that you don’t use the same one for everything. • Keep your virus protection up-to-date. Remember, if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Honoring American Heroes

Honoring American Heroes

After returning from Afghanistan with PTSD and a traumatic brain injury, medically retired Army Nurse Corps officer Jim Gardon came home to a surprise, and unfortunately, it wasn’t the good kind. The contractor his wife hired to do some remodeling did a haphazard job, and then left, and never came back. Non-profit RenovatingHope secured grants from the USO and the Gary Sinise Foundation to get the job done, and done right! RenovatingHope provides American Veterans with living spaces that are adapted to their unique needs in a way they can be proud of.
