The Kennedy Center will host the inaugural Lincoln Awards on January 7, 2015. The Lincoln Awards will recognize outstanding achievement and excellence in providing opportunities and support to our nation's Veterans and military families. The awards will be handed out at a nationally televised concert that will air to coincide with March 4, 2015, the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s 2nd Inaugural where he stated the national commitment to care for Veterans and their families. If you know someone whose work for our Veteran community is inspiring, recognize them by nominating them for one of the awards. Just being nominated is an honor. The categories include: Standard Bearer, Veteran, Public Service, Medical and Science, Caregiver, Entertainer, Artistic, Citizen, Corporate Citizen and Non-Profit Citizen. On September 7, 2014 at 10:00 a.m., Luke’s Wings will host “Heroes Walk to Fly,” a 1.5-mile family-friendly walk in Bethesda, home of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Walter Reed is the nation's largest military medical center serving Wounded Warriors from across the country. At the finish line, there will be a block party with live music and fun family activities. Proceeds benefit Luke’s Wings, which provides airline tickets for our Wounded Warriors and military friends and families. For more information, visit them on the web.

Transitioning Women

The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) is hosting the 2014 Summit on Women Veterans,  August 24-25th, at the Sacramento Sheraton Grand Hotel. The summit, titled "Bridging Gaps, Breaking Barriers," will feature several important workshops for women Veterans,  including educational benefits, financial literacy, and starting a business.  Keynote speaker Liz Perez-Halperin is a U.S. Navy Veteran who was deployed during the Iraq War. Ms Halperin is the founder and CEO of GC Green Incorporated, a general contracting and consulting firm focused on getting Veterans into the green energy industry. The event is open to the public. A Great Day Out

Artists for Trauma will be Joining the Rhythm and Joy Festival (RAJ14), providing a full day of soulful celebration, healing music, art and dance, featuring dynamic singers, musicians and performance artists. Created by Music & Arts director of the Agape International Spiritual Center, Rickie Byars Beckwith, RAJ14 will take place on August 30th, 2014 from 11:00 am to 8:30 pm at Warner Center Park in Woodland Hills, CA. In addition to the music and art, the event features an array innovative, sustainable, eco- friendly, socially conscious vendors and exhibitors offering a variety of products and services to work green, play green and live green. The event is free and open to the public, with lawn seating available on a first come, first served basis. For those who prefer reserved seating and parking, tickets are available for purchase as a "Very Inspiring Person." VIP ticket sales also support the ongoing work of both Artists for Trauma and the Rhythm & Joy Festival.

Also, many stores give a military discount without advertising it, so it is always worth asking. Make sure you have your military ID on you.
