While many of us will be relaxing over the Labor Day weekend, visiting with family and friends, I'll be thinking of Will Thomas, an extraordinary young man I'd like you to know. In 2011, a helicopter carrying 30 American Special Operation Forces (SOF), their military dog, Afghan commandos and a civilian interpreter was shot down in Afghanistan. There were no survivors. Although Will isn't from a military family, he wanted to do something to honor the memory of these brave souls. He thought the best way to do that was to support their loved ones, and the best way Will could do that was through basketball. So this weekend, as he has done for the last three years, Will can be found in front of a basketball net for "Rise and Fire," a shooting challenge to raise awareness and funds for SOF charities. It is my sincere hope that you will "like" his Facebook page and check out the Team Hawkeye website to lend your support in whatever way you can.

Labor Day honors the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. There are many workers who won't be getting a three-day weekend, and a large percentage of those workers will be in uniform. I salute those who dedicate their lives to our freedom, our safety, and our well-being.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Supporting the Caregivers

Helping Those Who Help Heroes

Helping Those Who Help Heroes

It is estimated that there are over one million post 9/11 caregivers of military Veterans, representing a growing-yet underserved-community within our nation's military. Current programs for caregivers typically focus on the soldier, and only diffusely relate to the needs of the caregiver. Heels on the Ground (HOTG) is an innovative new organization sponsored by the Green Beret Foundation that will address this gap. HOTG's mission is to improve the quality of life for caregivers of wounded Green Beret soldiers. HOTG accomplishes its mission via support networks, local weekend workshops, personalized mental and physical wellness plans, educational webinars, and transformative weekend retreats. Caregivers face enormous pressures and challenges, yet there are few options offered to them for healing. HOTG provides ongoing, customized support for caregivers, guiding them through the healing process and empowering them to make lasting transformations to their health, so that they can thrive.

A Reason to Run

Team Red, White and Blue

Team Red, White and Blue

Old Glory Coast to Coast (OGC2C) is a torch style hand-off relay race that will carry the U.S. flag across the country. At sunrise on 9/11/14, a lone runner will depart the grounds of the VA hospital in San Francisco, CA, carrying the flag. On Veteran's Day, some eight weeks later, that same flag will be carried onto the grounds of Bethesda Naval/Walter Reed Hospital. Along the way, hundreds of runners/walkers will have carried the flag across America in a show of spirit and support for Veterans, and to raise awareness about the challenges they face. Also, between 9/11/14 and 11/11/14, Johnson & Johnson will donate $0.29 to Team Red, White and Blue for each mile logged by a consumer using the Charity Miles mobile application who selects Team Red White and Blue, with a minimum donation of $25,000 and a maximum donation of $65,000. Three Hots and a Cot

Three Hots and a Cot

John Hopkins University and Syracuse University were asked by the George W. Bush Presidential Center to identify non-profits that work with Veterans. They identified over 46,000 non-profits! Then they identified the top 25 in this group in order to gather more information and share best practices to serve our nation's Veterans. We are happy to report that our friends at Three Hots & A Cot were identified as one of those 25 organizations. Networking with social agencies, faith based organizations and Veterans organizations, Three Hots and A Cot identifies Veterans who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless. They provide an array of services, including lodging, meals, transportation and job hunting assistance. For more information, visit them on the web.

10 Million in Scholarships for Military Families

ThanksUSA, a national non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities for America's military families, announced that it has awarded more than $10 million in post-secondary school scholarships as of the start of this academic year. The latest scholarship recipients will be honored at ThanksUSA's annual gala in Washington, D.C. on September 30, 2014, where Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno will be the keynote speaker. "Across the country, people have thanked our brave men and women in uniform by donating to ThanksUSA's scholarship fund, giving the gift of education to the spouses and of those who have given so much for our country," said ThanksUSA Chairman and CEO Bob Okun. "Surpassing $10 million in scholarship awards in our ninth year is a proud moment for all of us." Launched in 2006, ThanksUSA has provided scholarships for university, college and post-secondary vocational education to nearly 3,400 recipients totaling more than $10 million.

Helping Young Veterans Transition

As they transition to civilian life, many veterans are unemployed, underemployed, homeless, in support programs or despondent. Sadly, veteran suicide levels are at their highest point since WWII, with 22 or more veterans taking their own lives each and every day. Veterans 360 has developed a clearly defined program to provide young, recently-separated combat veterans with a program of support that will help them develop the professional and interpersonal skills needed to succeed in civilian life. Veterans 360 advocates an education versus cure approach. They help these veterans manage the resources that are available to them, and guide them so they are better able to complete a successful transition into civilian life. For more information, visit them on the web.
