The week features a series of events in a number of states that focus on resources, mentoring and speakers, designed to help small businesses. Habitat for Humanity, San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys in collaboration with the California Department of Veterans Affairs is offering an affordable homeownership program for veterans and their families. Veterans earning $52,000 combined family income annually or more & wishing to live in the Santa Clarita area will pay no more than 30-35% of their monthly income for mortgage, tax, HOA, insurance and water. Adapting the well-tested Habitat Enriched Neighborhood™ model developed by Habitat SF/SCV, homeownership is provided along with transitional training and services to promote self-sufficiency. Partnering with other non-profits, local businesses and community organizations, services include veteran-specific counseling, financial training, health and dental screenings, homework help for the children and much more. Inside the community will be several community parks with a large central playground. The Los Angeles Army Birthday Ball is one of the most significant Army events in Southern California. It is an opportunity for outreach to the community, to the local defense industry and – more importantly – to our Soldiers and their Commanders. This year, the event will be held at the Long Beach Westin with a reception and dinner. Live entertainment includes the 40th Infantry Band and the GIs of Comedy. Operation Family Caregiver

Returning home from deployment and separating from the military with visible injuries can be extremely difficult for Veterans and their families. Coming home with invisible wounds can prove to be even more difficult for some Veteran families. That is why Operation Family Caregiver (OFC) offers coaching, information and resources to these families. The program is provided through the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving (RCI). Leading Conference on Combat Stress

The 21st Annual International Military & Civilian Combat Stress conference, “From The Battlefield To The Neighborhood” will take place at the Tri-City Wellness Center, Carlsbad, California, from Friday-Sunday, May 16-18, 2014. The conference will also premier the documentary "The Hidden Enemy” on Friday, May 16th, at 6 pm. The documentary features interviews with over 80 soldiers and experts. This is the longest-running conference on combat stress in the world. This annual multi-disciplinary event brings civilian and military medical and mental health professionals from around the world together to share their clinical expertise and integrative treatment. Writing by American Warriors

All military Personnel, Veterans, and their families are invited to submit poetry (up to three), short fiction, essays, Warrior interviews (each has a 5,000-word limit ) or photography (up to three)for Volume 3 of Proud to Be: Writing by American Warriors. There will be a $250 prize awarded in each category. The deadline for the Call for Submissions and Contest for Volume 3 is June 1st. Two types of entries, anthology only and contest and anthology. Email previously unpublished work to Entries must be sent electronically as Microsoft Word docs (or .docx). Keep poems in one document (with 1st poem as title), name and contact info on 1st page only. Writers may win in any category no more than twice. Limit one submission in each category per person. Include a bio of 75 words or less with your submission. Winners will be notified by Nov. 1, 2014.
