April is the month of the military child. The recognition, introduced by the late Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger, emphasizes the important role children play in the Armed Forces community. Frequent moves, family separations through deployments followed by reintegration issues make life for these children especially challenging. Often military children are admired for their resilience and ability to deal with life changing events, including injuries, and even loss, of a parent. Such is the case of gold star son Myles Eckert. The story has gone viral, as Myles “paid it forward” by foregoing buying a new video game with his lucky find of a $20 bill , opting instead to giving it to Lt. Col. Frank Dailey at an Ohio Cracker Barrel.

Let’s recognize these children and honor them for their character, courage and resilience, and hold them in our thoughts and hearts year round. Consider following Myles’ example, and pay it forward to a military family, Veteran, or first responder.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Sullivan University

Veteran School Salute Recipient

Sullivan University faculty, staff and administration believe qualified individuals should have the opportunity to pursue formal academic training at the institution of their choice. Sullivan University System has maintained an academic partnership with the military since 1982, when the leadership at nearby Ft. Knox approached the faculty at Sullivan, asking them to train Army cooks in the culinary arts. Today, that academic partnership extends beyond the realm of active duty service members. Approximately 800 of Sullivan’s 7,000 students are either active duty military, Reservists, Veterans, or military dependents. These are just a few of the reasons why Sullivan University was awarded the Veteran School Salute. For more information, click here.

Hats Off to Sen. Shaheen

NH Sen Jeanne Shahenn

Legislation to Benefit Veterans

New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen has introduced two bills to help Veterans look for jobs and start small businesses. The Veterans Hiring Act would cut payroll taxes for businesses that hire Veterans. The Veterans Entrepreneurship Act would lower the cost of Small Business Administration loan programs designed to help Veterans start their own small businesses. It would permanently eliminate fee waivers for Veterans applying for SBA Express loans and would focus on pre-deployment financial counseling and emergency assistance. The bill also requires the SBA to identify ways to improve its outreach and services for female Veterans.
