It was disheartening to hear that the Senate failed to pass a comprehensive Veterans bill that would have extended health care benefits to hundreds of thousands more veterans each year. Additionally, it would have provided fertility aid to war-injured veterans, and given caregiver support, currently only available to 9/11 Veterans, to families from all U.S wars. While we all may have differing opinions of the war, the one thing most Americans can agree upon is that we need to pay the debt we owe to the Veterans who have defended our freedoms. That is why, once again, I am urging your support of OTT13367, the Vow to Hire Heroes Extension Act of 2013. This bipartisan bill extends the work opportunity tax credit for hiring veterans through December 31, 2016. Please join me in contacting your elected officials at and and urge their support. For a one page analysis of this bill, click here.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Making a Difference

Gary Sinise

Hats Off to Gary Sinise...Again!

In his ongoing quest to thank those who have served and sacrificed, Gary Sinise decided to take 50 servicemen and women from Walter Reed Bethesda, Fort Belvoir, and Naval Medical Center San Diego on a three day, all-expenses paid trip to Hollywood. Gary chartered an American Airlines plane to fly the group to Los Angeles. Then, the fun began! Disneyland, Paramount Studios (for a screening of Forrest Gump, complete with P-51 Mustang flyovers) and a face to face meet and greet with Bubba- Mykelti Williamson, Director Robert Zemeckis, and Forrest himself, Tom Hanks. The trip concluded with a concert by the Lt. Dan Band. To learn more about Gary and the great work he is doing, visit the Gary Sinise Foundation online.

Out of the Darkness

Give an Hour

Helping Veterans, Active Duty, Guard and Reserves

The suicide rate among active-duty soldiers has fallen sharply. While that is promising news, there is still much to be done. According to Army data, the suicide rate among those in the Guard and Reserves has gone up, perhaps because they have less access to military counseling when they are not on active duty. That is where organizations like Give an Hour (GAH) come in. GAH works to ensure that those who have put on the uniform of the U.S. Armed Forces can find the resources they need to lead the lives they deserve. Many of them, along with their family members, need help putting the pieces of their lives back together. With a network of over 6,700 mental healthcare professional, GAH is well on the way to being able to address the counseling needs of those who serve, past and present. Service Project

Reporting for Duty

Reporting for Duty, Again

Through a service project hosted by nonprofit The Mission Continues, three branches of the U.S. Military joined forces to install a 3.4 kilowatt AC solar electric system for the King family in Los Angeles. There was no fanfare or star power, only the feeling of camaraderie and honor that comes with serving your country and your community. Made up of Veterans from the U.S. Navy, Army, and Marine Corps, most evident was the work ethic cultivated through commitment in service to our country. The Mission Continues empowers military Veterans to serve our country in new ways by putting to use new skills learned in service and giving them the tools needed to succeed as they transition back into civilian life.
