I have always believed that when we ask our fellow citizens to serve in the armed forces, we make a promise that we will provide them with the resources they need to do their jobs, and take care of them when they return home. We, as a nation, have an obligation to support those who have sacrificed for us. Clearly, our society holds those who serve in uniform in high esteem. Yet returning Veterans are at greater risk than their civilians for unemployment, homelessness and suicide. In too many cases, their American dreams seem out of reach. Our Veterans deserve every opportunity to achieve the American Dream that they fought for. To that end, we helped to facilitate a partnership between CalVet and Habitat for Humanity that will result in 100 affordable homes for California Veterans. It is my sincere hope that this will become a model for partnerships nationwide. If you would like to work together or receive more information regarding this model and how to replicate it in your state, please email me.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Dental Help for Veterans

Rebuilding Americas Warriors

Pro Bono Dental Surgeries

A number of Iraq War Veterans are experiencing major dental problems since returning home. The problem for these veterans is that the VA doesn’t pay for dental care unless a soldier is 100 percent disabled. That means they have to pay huge dental bills without any government help. One non-profit that is stepping up to the plate is Rebuilding America’s Warriors (R.A.W). Dedicated to providing reconstructive surgeries to American war veterans who have recently been wounded and/or disfigured while on active duty, R.A.W has enlisted the help of a dozen dentists nationwide. Good Read

American Story Book Cover

Stories That Define the Human Spirit

Bob Dotson believes that even the most ordinary Americans have done something extraordinary in their lives; it's just a matter of discovering the story. "AMERICAN STORY: A Lifetime Search for Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things” is Dotson’s compilation of some of these stories. With great respect for our country’s military, Dotson tells the story of former Army Staff Sgt. Bobby Henline, badly burned in Iraq, who has turned his tragedy into stand-up comedy. Dotson also features the men who “wash the wall”, dedicated men on a mission to honor the memories of their fellow Vietnam Veterans. There are so many terrific Americans featured in the book, we highly recommend this “good read”.

WWII Video Contest for Teens

Did your relatives serve in World War II? Did you know that there are 1.2 million WWII veterans still living? However, time is running out to hear their stories of bravery and sacrifice that help define our country. The iHistory WW2 video contest is a national competition to inspire teen filmmakers to capture these stories on film. Starting August 19, 2013, aspiring young American filmmakers (ages 13-18) will have the opportunity to hear these stories firsthand, make a mini-documentary, and have the chance to win coveted prizes for themselves and their school. The total value of combined prizes is over $11,000. We’re also working in cooperation with the Library of Congress to preserve the interviews in their archives. View our flyer (Click Here) and share it with teachers and students. To learn how to enter the contest and view the Official Rules, please visit: Heroes-ww2.org
