I love celebrating the 4th of July. It is a reminder that we live in freedom because of the sacrifices made by our forefathers, who believed in a government by the people and for the people. Our country’s active duty military and our Veterans carry that tradition forward, and they are our greatest national resource. We can celebrate them every day by making sure that they have the skills and education needed to secure a good job, a roof over their heads, and first-class heath care. There are a number of great non-profit organizations that are assisting in accomplishing these goals, but they need your help. If you are in a position to make a financial contribution, the assistance is always appreciated. If not, there are also many local volunteer opportunities available.

Finally, I would like to offer condolences to the families of the 19 Hotshot Firefighters who lost their lives protecting the residents of Arizona. Their tragic deaths remind us that those who serve by protecting our health, safety and freedoms, are truly heroic.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Gary Sinise Makes it Four Years in a Row

In September, 2013, more than 250 severely injured veterans and caregivers from the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are expected to arrive in Charleston from across the country to once again participate in the 4th Annual Lt. Dan Week. Coordinated by the Independence Fund, the event is designed to bring the community together in a show of support for some of the most severely injured veterans from the post 9/11 War on Terror. Headlining the event for the fourth year in a row will be Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band. Organizers estimate that they need to raise $150,000 in sponsorship to stage the concert as a free event. To date, Blue Cross is the largest and only Silver Star sponsor for the event. If you are interested in attending or sponsoring the Lt Dan Weekend in Charleston, click here.

Heavy Equipment Training

New Heavy Metal Certification Program Launched

The National Association of Heavy Equipment Services (NAHETS) has a new national certification program that measures knowledge and skills for the operation of heavy construction equipment such as bulldozers, graders, front loaders, excavators and backhoes. Safe and effective heavy equipment operators are desperately needed in the growing construction and mining industries. The adaptable equipment proficiency test (ADEPT) is now being implemented in three heavy equipment training, the Colleges of Construction in Northern California, Oklahoma City and Atlanta, Georgia. The test effectively evaluates an operator’s skill level to meet and exceed industry and regulatory standards. A skilled worker with third-party certification is a valuable asset to contractors and employers because it verifies safety, skill and knowledge. For military veterans, certification from an approved heavy equipment training center can be the start of a rewarding civilian career in the construction industry. Military veterans can learn more about this program at www.nahets.org.

PBS Documentary Seeking Military Families

A PBS documentary in the making, “Coming Back” is seeking participants from military families. The three-part documentary series scheduled to air on PBS in May, 2014, will tell the stories of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and the challenges they face as they re-adjust to life on the homefront. The documentary will also focus on how military families deal with redeployment. They are particularly looking for a military spouse who is expecting his or her partner to return from serving in Afghanistan this summer, and would be willing to participate in the series. According to Associate Producer Kem Poston, “One of the most important aspects of this project will be not just to examine the reintegration process for veterans, but also to look at how families are dealing with re-entry.” To be considered for participation in the documentary, contact Kem Poston at 617-284-2840, or email kposton@powderhouse.net.
