On June 22nd, 1944, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Serviceman’s Readjustment Act of 1944, better known as the Montgomery GI Bill. The bill resulted in billions of dollars in education and training for millions of veterans. In return, the U.S. not only paid a debt owed to these veterans, but also enjoyed a return on investment as a result of the improved work force. Continuing that tradition, the Post 9/11 GI Bill keeps the promise that the nation has made to those who serve, a promise to help them reach their potential through education. As we salute the opportunities made possible by the GI Bill, we also need to examine what else we can do to thank Veterans for their service. Veterans are one of America’s greatest resources. If you want to find out about education benefits, please check out the information in our education section.

We also want to recognize that June 27th is PTSD Awareness Day. Our nation has been at war for over a decade and many warriors have served multiple tours. If you have PTSD or know someone who does, please know that there are resources out there. Getting help is the first step in taking back your life. Some of the resources available include the Veterans Crisis Line, Give an Hour, and The Soldiers Project.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Impact of Military Deployments

Impact of Military Deployments

Central Florida Families Sought for Study

Today’s military children face a challenge not experienced by those before them: many mothers and fathers have been deployed three, four, five or more times to Afghanistan and Iraq. Some may be away for half of their children’s formative years, with frequent transitions from living at home to serving overseas. The U.S. Department of Defense is turning to University of Central Florida professor Deborah Beidel to help find out how deployments impact family members at home. To participate, families must be in the Orlando, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Daytona Beach, Lakeland and Melbourne areas, have a deployed caregiver in any branch of the military, and at least one child 7 to 17 years old. The caregiver at home does not necessarily have to be a mother or father, but does have to be a primary caregiver. For more information, call 407-823-3910 or visit them on the web.
