As of January, 2013, there are 844,000 veterans unemployed & looking for work, including 252,000 post-9/11 veterans. In spite of the fact that they have valuable military experience, veterans frequently find it difficult to obtain formal private sector recognition of their military experiences and skill sets. We encourage the use of the Skills Translator. Additionally, frequent moves, and the resulting need to search for new employment, can be a significant problem for military spouses. We ask potential employers to keep these issues in mind when evaluating Veterans and their spouses for employment. Additionally, there are Substantial Tax Credits For Hiring Veterans available through the VOW To Hire Heroes Act. For more information, please click here. Those who have served in our Armed Forces and their families make great sacrifices, and when their service is completed, we owe it to them to successfully transition to the civilian labor market.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Pro Bono Surgeries

The Iraq Star Foundation is now Rebuilding America's Warriors The name change better reflects their mission offering reconstructive surgery to wounded and disfigured soldiers returning from all wars from September 11, 2001 forward. They are addressing ongoing issues not only caused by shrapnel, but the conditions under which our troops survived during their deployment. They offer our soldiers the confidence to seek their dreams of a normal life, or as many call it, their "new normal". The R.A.W network consists of 287 surgeons in 47 states, Donations go directly toward the soldier's transportation, hotel accommodations, food, surgical costs, medical supplies, hospitalization, anesthesia, medications, and aftercare. Rebuilding America's Warriors Foundation prevents the wounds of war from permanently disfiguring the promising young lives of those who fought to preserve our freedom. R.A.W. is a 501(c)3 charitable foundation.

Distance Education

Distance Education through the Military Academic Advancement Program (MAAP)

Online programs are particularly useful to those in the military community. The Department of Defense and the Department of Agriculture are partnering in a new initiative which offers graduate-level distance education opportunities through a consortium of land-grant universities. MAAP allows students to enroll in any of the member universities, in specific distance-learning programs, and take courses offered through other schools in the program. The option of taking courses through several schools can speed a student's progress through a graduate program. The program is open to military spouses, veterans, service members and civilians serving the military community. To view participating universities, click here.

A National Tragedy

Homeless Veterans

Taking Steps to Help Homeless Veterans

The Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs (SCVA) is to consider legislation that would allow taxpayers to use their IRS tax refunds to help homeless veterans. Check the Box for Homeless Veterans Act of 2013 was introduced by Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., along with fellow senators Mark Begich, Dianne Feinstein, Chris Coons, Mary Landrieu, Barbara Mikulski and Jeff Merkley. If enacted, the legislation would allow taxpayers to check a box on their annual tax return and make a donation of $1 or more to the federally maintained fund. Donated funds would be used to provide assistance to homeless veterans through programs currently in place at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Department of Labor. Let’s keep an eye on this. Please see list of Stand Downs and best practices on our site. Send us your local Stand Downs.

Getting Your Benefits

You’ve Earned Them

Thanks to California County Veterans Service Officers (CVSOs), tens of thousands of California veterans are getting the federal benefits they’ve earned. In 2011-2012, CVSOs set a new-veterans benefits record in benefit payments. Secretary Peter J. Gravett explained, “The partnership between CalVet and the CVSOs is critical to the ability of each to effectively reach and assist California veterans and their families…We appreciate the work the CVSOs do and congratulate them on their steadily increasing benefit payment numbers.” State and federal veterans benefits, available to everyone honorably discharged from the U.S. military, include disability compensation and pension payments, healthcare, tuition and training, housing, home loans, etc. CVSOs, trained and accredited professionals, help veterans and their families navigate the complex benefit application process. This service is provided at no cost. For a list of CVSOs, click here.
