As many of you know, "Got your six" is a military expression that means "I've got your back, and you've got mine." The six o'clock position or "six" is the designation of the rear of a military formation. "Got Your 6" is a campaign led by the entertainment industry to bridge the civilian-military divide. Our regular readers will be familiar with Give an Hour, a terrific non-profit we have the good fortune to work with. Give an Hour provides free mental health services to members of the military, veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, and their loved ones. In coordination with Got Your 6, Give an Hour has made a commitment to work with Clinton Global Initiative partners to educate 100,000 students by June, 2014, in mental health disciplines that address the unique issues of veterans and military families. I am honored to be working with Give An Hour and their Celebration of Service. I view this as a giant step forward towards reducing the stigma associated with seeking help for mental health issues.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Special Courts for Vets

Court for Vets

Treatment Instead of Time

No one who deploys anticipates returning home to life in a jail cell. Treating PTSD by self-medicating with drugs and alcohol has led to an increase in arrests for those who have served. A new approach to handling non-violent crimes committed by Veterans is resulting in a win-win situation. Veteran Treatment Courts are giving Veterans an alternative to jail or prison, and helping steer them towards treatment and recovery. With the help of Veterans Justice Outreach Specialists and Veteran Treatment Courts, Vets are being given a second chance. There is a criteria that must be met in order to be eligible for Veterans Court, including discharge status and length of active duty. Welcomed by communities for their efforts to help Vets in need, Veteran Treatment Courts continue to spread across the country. To see if there is a Veteran Treatment Court in your area, click here.
