Army Surgeon General Names 2015 PA Recognition Award Winner

Professional development is ongoing and critical for medical teams; be it new developments, devices, or techniques.  Physician assistant Maj. John Robinson was recently recognized for his efforts to improve practices that have directly resulted in sustaining high casualty survival rates. In March, Robinson was presented with the Surgeon General’s 2015 Physician Assistant Recognition Award. The annual award is recognition by the Army Surgeon General to a physician assistant who has made a significant contribution to military medicine.

Robinson’s commander, Col. John Garr, nominated him for the honor, and Lt. Col. Jeffrey Oliver, physician assistant consultant to the Army Surgeon General, made the presentation. In addition, Robinson’s leadership and innovation were recognized by awarding him the Office of the Surgeon General Certificate of Achievement and the Meritorious Service Medal.

Robinson was aware of the challenges for medics in-theater, which inspired him to focus on specific junctional tourniquets for hemorrhage control ,particularly in areas of the body difficult to compress. With the specific tourniquet devices, Robinson traveled to American Role I Forward Operating Bases to distribute and provide training to all appropriate medical personnel on their use.

While officer-in-charge, Combat Casualty Care Course, and Pre-Hospital Trauma Coordinator, Joint Theatre Trauma System, Robinson identified areas in Role I pre-hospital trauma care needing improvement through the use of Tactical Combat Casualty Care After Action Reports, a practice he established. From this data, Robinson recognized the need for an innovative device to better control hemorrhaging in point of injury trauma care.

Additionally, Robinson was instrumental in implementing multiple initiatives. These initiatives included advancing the Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute’s mission of enhancing operational and sustainment capabilities. This resulted in 1,000 tri-service, Department of Defense and international medical officers receiving training.

To assure service members in any battle space are apprised, Robinson established the Combat Medic Conference conducted bi-monthly through Defense Connect Online, to share case review and address process issues.

Robinson is currently assigned to the Combat Medicine Department, DMRTI under the Education and Training Directorate, Defense Health Agency.

"As the pre-hospital trauma coordinator, Joint Theatre Trauma System, the things you have done through DMRTI, Combat Casualty Care Course and downrange you have saved lives," Oliver said at the award ceremony, conducted at Camp Bullis.
